Speaking Monday at the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association conference in Adelaide, Ferguson pointed to a Deloitte report commissioned by the association that says Australia’s combined identified gas resources, excluding shale natural gas, are about 392 trillion cubic feet.

That’s about 184 years worth of gas at current production rates, the minister said.

Liquefied natural gas exports in 2010-11 totaled 20 million tons, for a value of $10.3 billion, he said, making Australia the third largest exporter in the Asia-Pacific region and the fourth largest in the world.

For 2012-13 the country’s exports are projected to grow a further 19 percent to be boosted by Woodside Petroleum’s new Pluto LNG project in Western Australia.

Based on proposed and committed new projects, the minister said, Australia’s LNG production capacity is projected to quadruple, “potentially making Australia the world’s largest producer of LNG.”

APPEA says $89.8 billion of LNG projects have been approved in the country over the last year, bringing to $169 billion the value of the seven LNG developments under construction.

It estimates that a further $329 billion could likely be invested in Australia’s oil and gas sector through 2020.

“While global economic uncertainty remains a threat to ongoing investment, our trading partners continue to show confidence in Australia’s capacity to meet their energy demands,” Ferguson said.

But the report warns that rapid growth of Australia’s oil and gas sector poses challenges for industry and government alike, including a rising Australian dollar that has resulted in increased development costs.

David Knox, chief executive of Australian oil and gas producer Santos and chairman of the APPEA in his speech Monday to the group called on the Australian government to remove regulatory uncertainty or risk losing up to $329 billion in future investments, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Noting that the LNG sector is characterized by contracts that are typically decades long, he said success in project delivery was fragile and ”delays and uncertainty at this time risks seeing other projects leapfrog Australian projects.”

In advance of the conference, APPEA Chief Executive Officer David Byers told Adelaide Now newspaper that South Australia’s next big growth area after oil and conventional gas may lie in shale gas.

Byers cited a 2011 U.S. Energy Department report last year that estimates a total of 396 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas in the Cooper Basin, an amount he said would be enough to power Adelaide for 6,600 years.

South Australia, he said, “is clearly set to play a major role in Australia’s emergence as a global energy superpower.”

Skechers USA Inc. will pay $40 million to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission that the footwear company made unfounded claims that its Shape-ups shoes would help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg and stomach muscles. Kardashian, Burke and other celebrities endorsed the shoes in Skechers ads.

The settlement, announced Wednesday, also involves the company’s Resistance Runner, Toners, and Tone-ups shoes. Skechers made deceptive claims about those shoes, too, says the agency.

Consumers who bought the shoes will be eligible for refunds.

The commission settled similar charges with Reebok last year over its EasyTone walking shoes and RunTone running shoes. That $25 million agreement also provided customer refunds.

Skechers billed its Shape-ups as a fitness tool designed to promote weight loss and tone muscles with the shoe’s curved “rocker” or rolling bottom ? saying it provides natural instability and causes the consumer to “use more energy with every step.” Shape-ups cost about $100.

Ads for the Resistance Runner shoes claimed people who wear them could increase “muscle activation” by up to 85 percent for posture-related muscles and 71 percent for one of the muscles in the buttocks, said the FTC.

The commission says Skechers falsely represented that clinical studies backed up the company’s claims about its toning shoes. The settlement bars Skechers from misrepresenting any tests, studies or research on its shoes in the future.

In Wednesday’s court filing, Skechers says it disputes the charges and is pursuing additional studies.

The settlement is part of a broader agreement also being announced Wednesday ? a settlement resolving a multi-state investigation led by the attorneys general from Tennessee and Ohio and involving more than 40 states.

The company, based in Manhattan Beach, Calif., will provide $40 million for customer refunds in the federal case and $5 million to the states.

Remember Apple’s new iPad WiFi + 4G? Well, forget that moniker, as this variant of the company’s latest slate has been quietly re-dubbed as the iPad WiFi + Cellular. As noticed by 9to5Mac, the change occurred within the last “24-48 hours” across many of Apple’s region specific webstores, including (but not limited to) those for the US, UK, Australia, Canada and various countries in Asia. If you’ll recall, in many regions the best you’ll get out of the slate is HSPA-connectivity, even though the slate is also equipped for LTE — something that Apple itself had considered good enough to market it as 4G despite offering refunds to customers in Australia who (like many others) couldn’t officially partake in its LTE. Interestingly, 9to5Mac also notes that a similar change hasn’t made its way over to the iPad 2, which still has its cellular-equipped variant named, iPad 2 WiFi + 3G.
